Some championship and major playoff seeding questions will be answered this week in D1A.

Big 10

Ohio State takes on Indiana in the Big 10 final at Kuntz Stadium. Both teams played cross-divisional matches last week, with Indiana falling to Kutztown 19-12, and Ohio State losing a close one 44-42 to Arkansas State.

When these two last met, it was 42-25 Ohio State in Columbus. This is a neutral-site match, albeit one a bit closer to Indiana's home campus. Note that total of 42 in those two matches. OSU fullback Tommy Kilbane has been on fire with his goalkicking, and those kicks have certainly not all been under the posts.

Indiana has explosive potential and can turn around pressure into long-range tries. But Kutztown managed to keep them in check and, for the most part, Ohio State managed, too, mostly from doing a good job holding onto possession.

Rocky Mountain

Utah Valley and Utah State have a rivalry match to play, but eyes will continue to be on Air Force, which has gone from strength to strength this fall.

After last week's impressive 39-5 win over Colorado, the Zoomies take on Wyoming this week.

"The players are buying into what we are doing and who we are," said Head Coach. John Cullen. "This was one of our best defensive performances and we're starting to show a mindset of 'tackling everyone and everything.'"

Center Luma Vaii and wing Evan Wells were outstanding defensively for the Zoomies and ran well with the ball also.

Utah, who don't have a game this weekend, have been right there. Like Air Force, the Utes are 2-1 with the lone loss being BYU.

"We're proud of what we've been able to achieve so far, but there's still a lot of work to be done," said Utah captain Logan Hawes. "There are a few areas of our game where were undisciplined and don't play the rugby we know we can. That just means taking full advantage of the all of the opportunities we get during a game."

Jonah Lange and Karsten McElreath have been the guys who put in work off the ball, with Lange's defensive pressure a bit last week's win over Utah State.

Unfortunately, Utah and Air Force don't play each other, but both have shown flashes and certainly signs of improvement this fall as they chase BYU.

Midwest

In the Midwest Conference, Arkansas State will be shaking off a bit of a scar vs Ohio State as they take on Davenport.

"We made a few errors that cost us a fair few points," said ASU captain Aaron Van Dyk. "Ohio State are definitely a good outfit and deserve the credit. They really brought it to us. Our lineout functioned well and we did a good job of capitalizing on them."

With good work offensively from Oni Sethosa, Paco Cisneros (who scored multiple tries), and Ned Madden, Arkansas State did enough. But Davenport will also be a tough game as they bring a 4-1 overall record into the match. Last week was their first loss, 36-17 to Lindenwood.

Speaking Of ...

Lindenwood will take the trip to Glendale, Colo. to face Arizona. The Wildcats are coming off a 57-15 win over San Diego State punctuated by Lucas Heim's three tries.

"Some new faces in the mix and I'm thrilled to see guys like Braedon Butte and PJ Enegren get quality minutes and really contribute," said Arizona DOR Sean Duffy. "Jonny Rix is another who's been working hard in the 2nds and is starting to break through at scrumhalf. But the overall composure of guys like Saxon Gerstl really helped put us into great attacking platforms, and we were able to convert a lot of those into points. Work to be done, but we're happy with the steps forward that everyone took this week."

For Lindenwood's Josh Macy, mixing up players to get minutes is standard fare for fall. But he's starting to settle on the top squad for spring.

"We saw some flashes from some guys jumping up to this level," Macy said after the win over Davenport. "We're in a great spot with a lot of season in front of us. We'll be dangerous once we can string together eighty minutes."

Also across regional boundaries, Cal gets a very early start for them in 15s as they host new D1A side Western Washington. WWU has played more together this fall but are under no illusions as they face the two-time defending national champs.

California

Also on the West Coast, Saint Mary's plays UC Santa Cruz in a conference match, and Cal Poly plays San Jose State.

Early days here, also as some of these teams find their feet before the winter break.

Rugby East

Life has two games remaining in Rugby East action and will be eager to win both. This week the Running Eagles take on a rebuilding Mount St. Mary's, and then next week they face West Point in a clash that will decide 2nd in the conference behind undefeated Navy.

Next week also Mary Washington will play Penn State in a game that decides who is 4th and who finishes at .500.

All of this will have an effect on potential playoff spots and seedings in the spring.
