North Vikings are looking to compete, and building.

The Colorado HS 7s season hits its 2nd round this week and there's a somewhat new name turning heads.

North HS is not new in the sense that the team has been around for a while, but they have not always had sufficient numbers for a full 15s team, and because of that has sometimes merged with other teams for the spring.

But in the fall they are often active in 7s.

"We started with five kids," said North Vikings Head Coach Nicholas Bahl. "As time went on we have grown, become more and more competitive, and attracted some really good athletes."

Now is the time for high school rugby players to think about their college search. The best tool to do that, and find real rugby teams at great schools, is Next Phase Rugby. Download the Next Phase Rugby app at the Apple Store, or go to NextPhaseRugby.com find out more or get started on Android.

But the biggest difference this year is attitude. They have always had athletic players, but the attitude was bit, in Bahl's own words, laissez faire.

This year the core group has responded to the admonition from the coaches, Bahl and Cole Hydrick, to work a bit harder.

"There's this idea of doing your best, but we presented the option to the kids, saying, do you want to do the work to be the best?" said Bahl.

The players embraced it. Players who weren't necessarily stars have got down to work to do some of the unheralded tasks. That has been huge.

Brendan Buckley is an impressive player and the leadership partnership of Mateo Lara and Peter Krankota has everyone working in the same direction. Griffin Wright has been a big scorer for the Vikings, too.

So, what's been the upshot? It's no shock that a renewed approach to being more competitive and working harder attracted players. North HS fields two teams in the Rugby Colorado 7s league, Purple and Gold.

They lost a close game to Monarch and also dropped a decision to East HS. But they beat Black Swarm/Palmer and are set to improve.

This week, games against Falcons, Black Swarm, and Titan, while their Purple side will play Monarch, Falcons, and East.

East HS and Monarch still lead the standings right now, but North is improving, and is worth watching.
