Aspetuck Wins Battle With Staples
Aspetuck took on Staples HS in Connecticut and got plenty of competition from their in-state rivals.
The day started with Aspetuck needing to learn the adjusted rules for COVID that would be enforced playing the High School Team from Westport. The biggest impact was the rule that no mauls would be allowed, and Aspetuck seemed to be off their game a bit because of it.
The day started with C-side match-up where the larger Staples side beat the Aspetuck C side in a score of Staples 29 Aspetuck 22. Then the B-side teams met in a shortened game of 20 minute halves, where it was all Aspetuck in a hard-hitting affair. Aspetuck 38 to Staples 7.
Then it was finally time for the A-side matchup in a battle with two of Connecticut's best High School teams. Staples had their sights set on taking down Aspetuck and were ready from the jump. The first 10 minutes was high intensity and saw both sides smash into each other. The forwards laid in some tremendous hits as the teams worked between the 22s.
Staples started off the scoring with a try at the midpoint of the first half and made the conversion to lead 7-0. Aspetuck answered back with a try scored by Joel Venables shortly after to make it 7-5. That score would remain through the end of the first half.
During halftime Aspetuck made the adjustment to turn the whole game around. Working the backs Aspetuck scored four unanswered tries in the second period. They wore down the Staples defense and then exploited the space. Pearson Hill, Venables, Carson Hill, and Joseph Coscia touched down with Brendan O'Neil converting two for a 29-7 Aspetuck win.
Aspetuck will travel to Charlotte, North Carolina next weekend to take on the top ranked Charlotte Tigers in their chance to unseat the reigning #1-ranked HS Club.
