Around the Country in HS Rugby

Here’s a look at some of the HS Boys action around the country:

Southern California

The club season heats up with Fallbrook facing Back Bay in a massive league game. The Young Aztecs look like they might be gearing up for a title, and play the Mustangs. Los Angeles, having upended Santa Monica and Belmont Shore, gets the week off.

Northern California

It’s a relatively straightforward single-school lineup as the three top teams play the three teams chasing them. But in the multi-school division, there’s a huge game between Sierra Foothills and Granite Bay. Granite Bay is 4-0 and Foothills is 4-1. The game is Friday night and should set up the winner for a shot at top spot. Jesuit already leads in the league and is unbeaten (remember Jesuit plays teams in both Single- and Multi-School divisions), but if Granite Bay wins, they are set to upend Jesuit to win the Sacramento conference outright.

Granite Bay fullback Sam Cusano had a nice game last weekend, leading all scorers and he continues to raise his game.

Oregon

The single-school league starts up with Union HS opening against Portland. In Oregon, sometimes the game for a team is actually two shortened games in a three-team round-robin. The shortened games are played for half points in the standings, so sweeping both games is the same as winning one regular-length game. It’s a different approach but avoids bye weekends. Eastside remains one of the stronger clubs in Oregon, and they will play a round-robin with Clark County, another tough team, and the Valley Rams, who have yet to win a game.

Linn-Benton and Beaverton are undefeated and Beaverton may well be after this weekend, but Linn-Benton plays a Bend team that could give them problems.

Washington

Top teams Liberty (at Budd Bay) and Chuckanut (hosting Kent) will look to remain unbeaten. The clash which is a pick ’em is probably Seattle at Eastside. In DII, Rainier Plateau looks to remain undefeated.

Idaho

Just getting started, 1-0 Capital faces 0-1 Bingham and 1-0 Mountain View plays 1-0 Rocky Mountain in an intriguing early-season matchup.

Colorado

It’s a quiet weekend in Colorado.

Utah

It’s a busy weekend in Utah but one where the top teams such as East, Herriman, United, Kautoa, Olympus, and Snow Canyon all play games they are favored to win.

Arizona

Red Mountain remains easily the strongest team here, with Scottsdale/Tempe second. Both should win this weekend.

Kansas

It’s a quiet weekend in Kansas.

Missouri

Park Hill South v Jefferson City highlights the games in Missouri.

Texas

It’s been a confused season in Texas with few teams really able to break away from the pack. Katy against Woodlands would give Katy a chance to do that. Jesuit of Dallas needs to be Rock Rugby to remain in a strong position.

Deep South

St. Paul’s isn’t playing, giving someone a chance to chase them down. The winner of Shaw v Jesuit of New Orleans could be in position to do that, but it’s hard to imagine St. Paul’s not being the best team in the Louisiana/Mississippi area.

Illinois/Indiana/Ohio

It’s all about getting ready for the league season, so Penn plays Fisher, while Notre Dame de la Salette plays Fenwick out of Illinois. Moeller v Bishop Dwenger is a nice DI warmup game between teams from Indiana and Ohio. St. Ignatius v Xavier was snowed out.

North Carolina

It’s a big weekend in North Carolina with Chapel Hill facing the Charlotte Tigers and Raleigh Rattlesnakes playing Southern Pines.

South Carolina

Even bigger in where Wando and South Greenville try to stay unbeaten. Both play winless teams.

Virginia

In Virginia we’re really just getting started. Heritage plays Hampton, NOVA plays Springfield/West End, and Fort Hunt plays Prince William.

Pennsylvania

The RugbyPa season exploded with top teams such as Downingtown, Doyleston (winners over Union in a scrimmage), West Shore United, St. Joe’s Prep (losers to Xavier last week), and Burrell all in action.

Florida

Al kinds of things on the line as Daytona plays the Cape Pirates in the North, and the Trojans play Key Biscayne in the South, and Riviera Beach plays Jupiter. Weston, led by a solid performance from flyhalf Matthew Mairowitz and with props Michael Murray and Adam Serota surging on looked good in the heat against the Trojans, and play Boca Raton this weekend.
