Arkansas State took an opening-weekend win over Indiana Saturday, holding off the Hoosiers 36-26.

Indiana came in after already having played a game, and it was an interesting situation what with Arkansas State undergoing a coaching change.

"We wondered whether there would be any cracks in Arkansas State because of the changes they're dealing with," said Indiana Head Coach Luke Gross. "To their credit, I think the changes have made them stronger. There were no cracks."

A-State captain Aaron Van Dyk agreed that it was a solid performance.

"As the first hit-out of the season, and all things considered after the past month we've had, I'm very proud of our group as a whole," said Van Dyk. "It was tough out there and the heat definitely played a role today, but we stuck together and got over the line when we needed to."

Arkansas State Head Coach Dominic Shaw was announced as moving to join the Lindenwood staff two weeks ago. The program is looking for a replacement but it has been tough. Meanwhile, Indiana learned some key lessons in this match.

"We didn't match their physicality esrly on, and it took a while, but once we did match it better we were able to showcase our skill," said Gross. "But Arkansas State is very tough."

Van Dyk mentioned the heat and indeed the game was played in the morning to avoid the forecast high of 101 degrees. It was still hot.

"There were a few things we need to work on in terms of the breakdown and set piece, but, again, I'm very proud of the group," added Van Dyk. "But I have to give credit to Indiana; they didn't go away and kept us honest tgroughout the whole match. It was a great contest and I am looking forward to continuing the relationship between us and them going forward."
