Arizona State Hosts UCLA in PAC Conference Action
Tempe, Ariz. - The Arizona State Sun Devils will face the UCLA Bruins on Saturday in PAC Rugby Conference play.
The Bruins are coming into the game off a good showing in the Dennis Storer Classic and are looking to capitalize on that success.
“We know we have to perform on Saturday,” said Head Coach Gary Lane. “The Bruins have had some good wins against quality competition and they are playing well at the moment, we have to remain focused and the players have to execute well for us to win. We have made some good additions to our team this year. We had very few graduate last year so the team has at least a year of playing together which is invaluable.”
The Sun Devils are coming off a preseason win over GCU and an end-of-camp loss to Saint Mary’s. “The players have worked very hard to improve their rugby IQ over the last few weeks, and are improving every practice,” said Lane.
The game scheduled for the ASU Soccer stadium has been moved to the polytechnic campus due to the very poor weather.
“Its not what we had planned, but it’s the best-draining field on the whole ASU campus. So if want to play the game at all, we have to move fields,” said Lane.
For UCLA, Head Coach Scott Stewart said he has graduated some high-quality players, not least of which were All Americans Seb Sharpe, Pierre Courpron, and Zach Bonte.
"We’re pretty young," said Stewart. "We have an awful lot of young guys on this team, and they're in their second or third year and they've got to step up now. It's their time. We're hoping to play fast and hard and fearless, and be an exciting team to watch. If we stay healthy, we're going to be competitive."
The teams kickoff on Saturday 1pm at the Polytechnic Campus.
