Arizona Over LSU in DIA Playoffs
Arizona Over LSU in DIA Playoffs
Arizona looked very impressive in defeating LSU 30-10 Saturday in the DIA playoffs.
The Wildcats, playing on the road in Baton Rouge, La., spread the ball nicely and enjoyed an excellent game from flyhalf Kyle Rogers.
The game itself was tight through much of the first half, as Arizona tried to run, and LSU defended well. The Tigers took a 3-0 lead with an excellent, wind-skewed penalty kick from Alec Miller. Arizona replied with some aggressive running that left LSU offside - wing Adam Wilson put the kick over to tie the game at 3-3. That's how it stayed for much of the first half. Arizona was aggressive in trying to set wings Wilson and Ben Joseph free, but LSU held on.
Then, late in the first half, a nifty counter from fullback Jack San Pieto set up Arizona in the LSU 22. Rogers attempted to kick for a winger to chase, but the wind took the ball into touch. From that lineout, however, Arizona stole the ball, set a ruck, and scrumhalf Jonah Eldridge popped the ball to prop Dacoda Worth for the try. That made it 8-3 at halftime, but in the second half, Arizona took over.
The Wildcats continued to press the pace, and the fatigue, and the penalties (offside, in from the side ... signs of the opposition getting quick ball) started to show. A nice run from Shane Dempsey set up Arizona inside the LSU 22. Eldridge tapped quickly on a penalty, and then Joseph picked up and dove over for a forward's try by a back. That made it 15-3. Soon thereafter, from a scrum-5, Arizona No. 8 Tyler Hansen picked up just as the scrum was wheeling around and stretched over. 22-3 after Wilson's conversion. The wing then added a penalty.
LSU put in a long period of possession, putting Arizona under pressure, but the Wildcats defended well and made some physical tackles. Eventually, though, they were punished by some over-aggressive play, and a penalty for a high tackle results, after a few mis-steps and a ball held up in-goal, with a try for Louis Flores. Miller converted to make it 25-10.
But just as the game was winding down, Arizona hooker Bryce Mantell showed off a nifty sidestep and chugged into the corner.
That finished the game off 30-10. It was a nice display from Arizona of direct passing, and aggressive defense.
