All-Time American List: Clarence Culpepper
All-Time American List: Clarence Culpepper
Clarence Culpepper played rugby for Philadelphia and (for longer) Roanoke during his career through the 1970s and 1980s.
Known as a mobile and tenacious openside flanker who covered a lot of ground, Culpepper was also a superb leader and captain.
He was capped twice for the USA, the first time against the England XV at Twickenham. He also captained the USA Cougars that toured South Africa and Zimbabwe (then called Rhodesia) in 1979.
That team beat two-time Currie Cup winners Northern Transvaal.
Culpepper was an eastern US rugby player through-and-through, representing the Eastern Penn RFU, Eastern RFU, and Virginia RFU in select-side play.
A very cerebral player, Culpepper coached through almost his entire career, coaching Conestoga HS, being the player-coach at Roanoke, and then coaching clubs and select sides, as well as the USA national team, into the 1990s.
