Reports - Friday to Sign with USA 7s Team
Mike Friday is going to be announced officially as the new USA Men's 7s Head Coach next week, according to reports by ESPNScrum and The Rugby Paper.
This report supports speculation that Friday was going to be the coach despite taking the Director of Rugby job with London Scottish. The hiring of Chris Brown as an assistant coach in residence also seemed to bolster the rumor, given that Brown was Friday's assistant with Kenya in 2012-2013. USA Rugby put out an arctic interview with Brown that mentioned Friday repeatedly, something the organization doesn't do unless the person mentioned is internationally iconic (which Friday isn't quite) or the person mentioned is going to be working with USA Rugby soon.
In the interview, Brown, who will handle skills and conditioning, did not say Friday would be the Head Coach, but did say "I have no doubt it's going to be a top-quality guy."
In addition, Brown said he was thrilled to be in residence among other Olympic athletes at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. And he was thrilled to be in the USA.
“America has always fascinated me because of the population group and how well they do other sports,” Brown said. “I’ve had many mates over the last 10 years come over here and play one or two seasons. My understanding is the game is developing quite quickly and people are open to it once they see it because there is a football element to it. For me, [working in the States] was an interest thing – it had just never been a possibility from my side of things. The American setup is quite tough nowadays. To get this opportunity is a great privilege and I’m sure I’ll learn a lot about America as a whole as I go forward.”
Friday will reportedly split him time with London Scottish and the USA team. He won't, apparently, be living in the United States. Instead, he will communicate much of what needs to be done through his trusted assistant, Brown, and then join the team periodically - probably in time to establish game plan and preparation for the nine legs of the 2014-2015 World Series, a total of five assemblies, with the first (Australia) being for one tournament, and the other four assemblies being for two tournaments each.
Whether Friday will be able to balance the two jobs remains to be seen. Clearly he has to get London Scottish ready to play in their Greene King IPA Championship season. But what happens if Scottish needs him in late November, or in February?
