A New Goalkicker for Eagles
A New Goalkicker for Eagles
The USA Men’s National Team is out of goal kickers, and will turn to a rookie to get points for them.
Ronnie McLean will earn his first cap for the USA, lining up at fullback against Fiji. Normally a center for the Ealing Trailfinders, McLean will also take on the goalkicking duties. In his career playing for Ealing, Birmingham Solihull, and Coventry, has, according to Statbunker, has hit 83 out of 124 kicks at goal as a professional. That’s only a 67% success rate, but it’s better than anyone else on the team. With Adam Siddall hurt, Chris Wyles back with Saracens, and Folau Niua with the USA 7s team now, Head Coach Mike Tolkin didn’t have any experience goalkickers to turn to.
McLean has been playing in the lower divisions of pro rugby in the UK for some time after studying at Loughborough. He was born in Los Angeles and moved with his family to the UK when he was six years old.
He has been on the USA radar for a couple of years, and was named to the game day squad against Tonga last Saturday, but didn’t get on the field. Friday, he will start against Fiji and will be the team’s front-line goal kicker.
