Eagle Women Picked for UK Tour
BOULDER, Colo. - Following a 50-player camp, the USA Women's National Team to tour the UK has been named.
Thirty players and 10 non-traveling reserves will take to England and Wales for the final preparations before the IRB Women’s Rugby World Cup 2014.
Extensive thought was used in selecting the group that will take on Wales (June 28) and England (July 2 and 6).
“The decisions we made this week defined careers of players, so they deserved a deliberate process,” Eagles Head Coach Pete Steinberg said. “All areas were considered and we reviewed the performances from all games over the past three years.”
Steinberg and his staff took into account all aspects of a player’s abilities - both on and off the field.
“We looked at video of players, notes that have been compiled from team assemblies, as well as data recorded from the strength and conditioning side,” said Steinberg.
Shaina Turley, who has captained the Women’s Eagles most in the current World Cup cycle, is eager to see what the selected roster is capable of.
“Personally, I’m very excited about the squad that has been selected,” noted the flanker. “Each player has unique qualities that they bring in to make this team great and I can’t wait to showcase that to the world.”
To aid in the selection process, players in attendance at the Top 50 Camp were split into two squads that pitted probables against possibles. Two scrimmages allowed players who were possibly going to be named in the narrowed squad to face off against those who were probably going to make the squad.
After the first contest teams were reseeded for the final match.
“Players demonstrated an amazing commitment in the games,” said Steinberg following the camp. “They were the highest level of domestic games I have ever seen.”
In addition to the scrimmages, attention was also given to scrums, the tackle contest, and implementing flexibility for the attacking structure.
“After the Can-Am Series, those were areas that we thought we needed to work on the most and is what we did with our time between scrimmages,” said Steinberg.
Following the camp’s events and selections, focus quickly shifted to the upcoming contests against Wales and England.
“This was a very tough week that is the culmination of three years of hard work,” said Steinberg. “Now we turn our focus to the UK Tour and the World Cup.”
To support the Women’s Eagles in the path to the “Final in ’14,” a jersey giveaway contest is currently underway.
