Club 7s Field Confirmed

BOULDER, Colo. – The field is set for the 2014 USA Rugby Emirates Airline Men’s and Women’s Club 7s National Championships, as 32 teams from across the United States will converge on Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Wash., for two full days of rugby sevens action Aug. 9-10.

Leading the field is the return of both defending champions, where host Seattle OPSB Rugby (men) and the Berkeley All Blues (women) sit atop their respective pools. Seattle and Berkeley are also arguably the most accomplished sevens programs in U.S. rugby history, with each team leading their brackets in historic championships captured (six and two, respectively).

Also returning to the event are each of the eight women’s quarter-finalists from 2013, as well as the top five men’s teams from 2013. Overall, 19 of the 32 teams repeat from 2013 (10 men’s; nine women’s).

In the women’s bracket, five teams have now successfully advanced to all four USA Rugby Women’s Club 7s Championships: the Berkeley All Blues, Northern Virginia (NOVA), the D.C. Furies, Philadelphia, and the San Diego Surfers.

The men’s group includes five former event champions – Seattle OPSB (six), Belmont Shore (three), Old Blue (two), the Chicago Lions (one), and the Maryland Exiles (one). It also notably includes the Denver Barbarians (men), last year’s runners-up. The Barbarians’ 2014 qualification extends their consecutive-appearance record to 14, as well as their total number of overall appearances to 21 – both USA Rugby national records.

Hosting this year’s event at the Starfire Sports Complex is Seattle OPSB Rugby. Starfire Sports includes a 4,500-seat stadium and 11 outside fields, and is a world-class facility that houses the training headquarters of the Seattle Sounders (Major League Soccer). Located just minutes from the Seattle airport, the complex will include a beer garden, fan zone, and apparel sales. Additionally, the complex will host a youth jamboree and high school invitational tournament (Serevi Cup), both of which will be powered by Serevi Rugby.

With 96 matches taking place over the weekend, fans in attendance and at home will be entertained with hours of rugby sevens. All matches will be streamed live on USA Rugby TV, with further broadcast and commentator details to be available shortly. Tickets are available at $10 for a one-day pass or $15 for a two-day pass. Family four-packs are also available for $50 and include four two-day passes.
