Utah Lions Win Denver 7s
The Utah Lions 7s team followed up their HSRC 7s Championship with a win in the HS Boys bracket of the Denver 7s this past weekend.
In a very competitive bracket, Utah worked through some difficult matches and finished the stronger, beating East HS 40-0 in the final.
Utah opened up with a 57-0 victory over the Central Terrors, But things weren't so easy against a physical and skilled LIttleton Eagles team. LIttleton took an early 12-0 lead by leveraging their speed and physicality. Used to winning by comfortable margins, the Lions were a little shocked, but rebounded in the second half with tries from Colton Swapp (Summit Academy) and Aleni Aiono (Wasatch of Murray). Darian Power (United) kicked both conversions to give his side a 14-12 lead.
Littleton was also able to put another unconverted try on the board as the clock was ticking down to make it 17-14 with a minute left. That was enough as Utah moved the ball very nicely, spread the Littleton defense, and then sent Tanu Aupiu around the corner.
Aupu almost made it to the tryline but was tackled toward the touchline. He offloaded before going into touch and David Montoya (Highland) was there to take the pass and score.
The dependable Power kicked over the conversion and Utah had a tough 21-17 victory.
The rest of the tournament, Utah allowed only five points. Power missed only two conversions over the entire weekend and is 35-37 for the year for the Lions.
In the final in the Dicks Sporting Goods Stadium, Utah hammered East 40-0 to win the tournament.
The Lions are now headed to their toughest tournament to date, the Victoria 7s tournament in Victoria, BC. The elite boys division is going to be tough with Province All-Stars from BC, Ontario, Alberta plus All-Star teams from Washington (Loggers), NorCal and a British touring side from Cardinal Vaughn.
