MARC's Opening Weekend Round-up
The Mid-Atlantic conference (MARC) got underway last weekend and saw six DII women’s colleges kick off their competitive seasons.
The most convincing result came from Delaware, but the 27-point win over The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) wasn’t the most impressive part of the game. Thirteen minutes into the match, Delaware lost Mitzi Oliver to a red card (high tackle) and had to finish out the game with only 14 players. That disadvantage didn’t slow Delaware’s attack, however, and the 32-5 win put the team atop the Tri-State Division standings.
The Pennsylvania Division hosted two games, the first occurring between York College and MARC newcomer Millersville University. A strong presence in DIII, the Marauders were not intimidated by the uptick in competition. Millersville controlled the pace of play and were defensively sound in the 22-10 win.
The Lock Haven vs. Scranton match was closer than expected. The former was one of MARC champion Kutztown’s biggest rivals last year – and the past several years – but Scranton took an early lead and stayed in step with the traditionally stronger side. But Lock Haven had a little more in the tank and eked out a 17-10 win.
The action picks up this weekend, as the Pennsylvania Division pits East Stroudsburg vs. Bloomsburg, Lock Haven vs. York College, and Scranton vs. Millersville. In the Tri-State Division, Rowan plays LaSalle, TCNJ hosts St. Joe’s, and Kutztown travels to Delaware.
