St. Mary's Win DIA FInal
STANFORD, Calif. – The Gaels completed its final step in its 12-month road to redemption. Under the bright lights of Steuber Rugby Stadium at Stanford University, a year after coming up just short in the D1A Final, Saint Mary's College defeated Life University, 21-6, to win its first National Championship.
In a game pinning a seemingly-unstopped offensive attack in Saint Mary's, versus Life's impenetrable defense, the match was played at a pace which favored the reigning Champions for the first 40 minutes of the D1A Final rematch between the country's No. 1- and No. 2-ranked teams.
In the opening stanza, Life controlled possession, using its powerful forwards to methodically keep the ball in Saint Mary's half of the field.
UCF Takes 2nd Straight DIAA Title
STANFORD, Calif. – The University of Arizona’s inspired trek to the Men’s Division I-AA National Championship was stopped short by the University of Central Florida Sunday at Steuber Rugby Stadium, as the Knights won their second consecutive title with a 64-13 victory.
Knowing Central Florida would pound away at the Arizona defense, the Wildcats looked to get on the board early. Some penalty trouble for the Knights helped, setting up Kyle Rogers for a penalty kick in the 13th minute. Gunnar Johnson kicked a penalty of his own in the 17th minute to tie the match. Another penalty gave Arizona a lineout within 10 meters of the Central Florida tryline.
Knights, Wildcats into DIAA Final
STANFORD, Calif. – The University of Central Florida booked a spot in their second-straight Men’s Division I-AA College National Championship game thanks to a 43-5 victory against University of San Diego in the semifinal Saturday at Steuber Rugby Stadium.
The Knights will face the University of Arizona, as the Wildcats defeated Bowling Green to advance to the final on Sunday.
The first 20 minutes of the match UCF v USD semi did not favor the Knights as much as the final score suggests, and the Tereros had multiple chances in the first 20 minutes to open the scoring. Big runs from winger Lucas Morales and center Teryl Reed pushed San Diego into the attacking half, but the Tereros could not find a way to cross the try line.
