Rugby East Wrap - KU, Army 2-0

Army moved to 2-0 in Rugby East and so did Kutztown as a big day in that conference’s season came to a close.

In a game live-streamed by Goff Rugby Report, Iona held off a furious University at Buffalo cargo to win 31-8 and improve to 1-1.

“The effort was all defense,” said Iona Head Coach Bruce McLane. “We’d win a lineout, and drop the ball. We’d win a scrum, and knock the ball on. So they had a lot of possession and we just needed to make tackles. More than anything else, that’s what we did.”

Captain and lock John Cullen scored for Iona, and No. 8 Eva Staikos, center Michael Scarcella, flyhalf Andrew Cacinovic, and wing Brian Moyo also all touched down, as Iona moved to 1-1.

Meanwhile Army held off a determined St. Bonavanture team. The Cadets led 17-5 at halftime but saw Bonnies come back to make it 17-10 and then 22-15. But somehow St. Bonavanture couldn’t quite haul in West Point. A John Sullivan try brought them within a try late 29-22, but a late Army try put the game out of reach.

Still it was a solid effort from St. Bonavanture. Army is now 2-0 in Rugby East.

They trail Kutztown, however, as KU registered their second bonus-point win. Paced once again by Robert Stortz, who scored three tries, KU ran out to a big lead, only to see Wheeling Jesuit close in somewhat late in the game. Johan van Wyk, John Sage, and Trent Hensley also scored for Kutztown, while Niku Kruger kicked two penalties and three conversions for 12 points.

Kutztown beat Wheeling Jesuit by a score of 42-25. WJU drops to 1-1.
