Lawrenson Gets Offer from Counties Manukau
Recently-graduated Kutztown University All American Mike Lawrenson has been asked to join the Counties Manukau Steelers in New Zealand's ITM Cup competition.
Lawrenson was seen by former All Black star Tana Umaga, who is the Steelers' player-coach, when Umaga was in the United States and attended the College Rugby Championships 7s invitational. In the CRC, Lawrenson was a huge factor in KU getting to the final.
The big lock then followed that up with a very strong performance for the All Americans, starting all three games during the June assembly. Lawrenson had been looking to enroll at Palmer College but has put that off with the offer from Counties Manukau. Umaga said he was looking for a big, young lock who is mobile and can run a lineout, and Lawrenson fits the bill.
Born in South Africa, Lawrenson has been in the USA for five years attending school, and is a two-time All American rugby player.
He recently confirmed his commitment to the USA in an interview with Goff Rugby Report. "My goal is to play for the USA," Lawrenson said. "This opportunity is a stepping stone, for me. I know I have a lot to learn, but I think I can help the team."
Lawrenson is awaiting visa approval - not always the easiest of things - before joining the Steelers in New Zealand. Counties Manukau are in their preseason right now, and open up their ITM Cup season August 14 against Taranaki.
