CWU, Washington Winners
Central Washington made quite the statement Sunday with a 124-0 pasting of Washington State in the NCRC league opener for both teams.
There’s nothing much to say about this game except that it was one-way traffic and didn’t get any easier for the Cougars when the subs came on. Josh Bower kicked 12 conversions for 24 points. The Wildcats scored 20 tries, with Gavin Shag and Vili Toluta’u scoring three each, and Scott Dean, Tent Barnes, and Beau Davis all touching down twice.
Washington also got on the winning side this week, beating Eastern Washington 34-24.
“They are a big, physical team - athletic guys who are tough to bring down,” said UW Head Coach Kevin Swiryn. “We’re usually the smaller of the two teams on the field, and that was the case yesterday. The guys handled it really well. We played the Seattle Saracens 2nd team last weekend and that was a good, competitive game against a physical men’s team. It helped us. We’re putting a lot of emphasis on our defense and our tackle technique.”
Washington graduated 17 players and the Huskies boast just one senior on the roster. But they showed enough to win. Riley Poulson, who can play almost any position, had a strong game for the Huskies and flyhalf Jack Stimson showed flahses of his huge potential.
But Swiryn said that this young team was inconsistent, putting moments together to take a 22-7 lead, and then letting their cohesion falter as EWU stormed back. Two late tries sealed it for UW.
The results put UW and CWU atop the NCRC, but there’s plenty more to do and more teams waiting to catch them. Among them, Western Washington, which opened up their 1st team 15s season with a 48-7 defeat of Oregon State in a non-league game.
