Cal, UCLA Lead in PAC 7s

Cal and UCLA ran the table in pool games at the PAC 7s Rugby Championship Saturday at Witter Rugby Field, setting up a potential clash between the rivals.

Arizona State finished the day 3-1, and Utah also finished 3-1 to finish second in pool play to join UCLA and Cal in the semis.

The Bears shut out Stanford 41-0, Oregon State 31-0, and Arizona 39-0, before finishing with a 36-5 win over Arizona State.

“We look forward to building on our performance tomorrow,” Cal's Andrew Battaglia told CalBears.com. Battaglia's five tries on the day equaled the five scored by teammate Jesse Milne. “It was great playing at home with such tremendous support from fans and teammates.”

UCLA, meanwhile, defeated Washington State 33-5, Oregon 22-7, Colorado 31-0, and in their final game of the day, Utah 19-10.

Sunday, Cal will face Utah, while UCLA takes on Arizona State in the Cup Semis.

In the consolation bracket, Oregon State takes on Colorado, and Arizona faces Washington State. The three remaining teams play in a round-robin for the Bowl, with USC, Oregon, and Stanford playing each other.

“We’ve got a long history with Cal so we will see how we do tomorrow," said Utah Head Coach Mark Drown. "We just want to keep possession. Our goal is to try to starve Cal of the ball because when they have possession, they are very dangerous.”

UCLA Head Coach Scott Stewart had to have been pleased with his team's performance on Saturday, but know that the knockout rounds will be harder.

"making sure our tackling is extremely sound and preventing offloads," Stewart said were his goals. "If we do that, I think we will have a chance.”

“This conference is very difficult in 15s and 7s," added Arizona State 7s Coach Ian Gregor. "The big key to doing well is possessions and today we did not really have good possession. We’re just hoping to improve on possession tomorrow and good hard defense.”
