GRR: St. Mary's
One of the things college rugby fans will be seeing as we move into winter is more rugby action from the West Coast among D1A teams.
It's hard to imagine it could get any better.
OK, maybe it could. Neither team was perfect. But then again, neither team abandoned their way of playing. Neither team backed down even a little bit. It was, in the end, the most entertaining, the most intense, and the most dramatic D1A final you could wish for.
Saint Mary's pulled away from the hard-charging BYU Cougars to win their D1A semifinal and book a place in the championship game May 4 in Houston.
Both teams looked to play fast and attack and the result was a 48-31 scoreline, almost double the total points scored in the other semifinal.
It’s Finals Week at BYU and while the Cougars have been preparing for a D1A semifinal, they are also deep into preparing for important exams and term papers.
“There are enormous demands on the players’ time,” said Head Coach Steve St. Pierre. “It’s a really important week.”
Just two weeks after pulling off a late comeback win over Cal, Saint Mary's won in impressive fashion over their Northern California rivals to take their D1A quarterfinal Saturday in Moraga.
