GRR: Mary Washington
For a new conference, the Chesapeake Collegiate has been a rousing success.
Few conferences can boast so many close games, and the conference itself is still hugely competitive, with five teams still in with a shot at a conference title.
In a rain-soaked game reminiscent of old-school rugby, the University of Mary Washington adjusted to the weather in the 2nd half and pulled away from the University of Virginia to win 34-12 in Chesapeake Conference action.
UMW improved to 3-1 while Virginia dropped to 1-3.
The University of Mary Washington defeated Salisbury University in Fredericksburg, Va. Saturday in the 2nd Chesapeake Rugby Conference game for both teams.
UMW got out to a fast start with a try from flyhalf Terence McPhillips in the first few minutes. This began up a flurry of scoring from UMW as they posted 17 points in the first 15 minutes.
The newly-formed Chesapeake Conference has finalized its schedule for the fall of 2016.
Mary Washington took a 50-42 win, and maybe a playoff spot, from American University last Saturday thanks, in part, to the traffic.
Both teams scored the same amount of tries, forcing each kicker to determine the outcome of the game. Luckily for Mary Washington and unluckiny for America, traffic delayed some key AU starters and they missed the first half.
