World Rugby Confirms RWCQ Games
World Rugby has released its summer Test Match list, and this has confirmed the Rugby World Cup Qualifier games for the USA Men's National 15s team.
As already reported, the USA will play Ireland on June 10 and Georgia on June 17 in friendly matches. But that's just a precursor to a two-game Rugby World Cup Qualifier series at the end of the month. The USA will play in Canada on June 24, and then host the return game on Canada Day, July 1. The venues have not been confirmed.
The USA has never beaten Canada in a Rugby World Cup Qualifier Series.
For the inaugural Rugby World Cup in 1987, both Canada and the USA received invitations. For the 1991 tournament, the USA, Argentina, and Canada played each other twice over the course of 1989 and 1990. The Eagles beat Canada one time, but overall Canada took the series with a 3-1 record, Argentina was 2-2, and USA 1-3. All three made the 1991 World Cup. In 1991 Canada made the quarterfinals, and thus earned an automatic spot in the 1995 tournament. The USA played a two-game series with Argentina in 1994, losing both games by close margins and failing to qualify for RWC 1995.
In 1998, Canada, Argentina, USA, and Uruguay played a round-robin series in Argentina to decide who would make the 1999 World Cup. The Eagles lost to Canada and Argentina, but beat Uruguay to take the #3 seed. Argentina finished 3rd in 1999 and earned automatic qualification for 2003.
In 2002, the Canada, USA, Uruguay, and Chile played in a qualification league where every team played the other three twice. Canada finished 5-1 and took the Americas #1 seed. Uruguay bat the USA 10-9 in Montevideo and finished 2nd with a 3-3 record. Both the USA and Chile ended up 2-4, and the Eagles beat out Chile by a slightly better points difference, and so got a chance in the repechage.
So in 2003 the USA played and beat Spain in two games to take one of two repechage places. Oddly, after arguably their rockiest pathway to the World Cup, the USA's actually World Cup performance was their best. They went 1-3, but one loss (to Fiji) was by a single point, and their results against France and Scotland were very competitive.
For the next tournament, the Eagles lost a one-off with Canada in 2006, and then took a two-game series with Uruguay to qualify for the 2007 World Cup. In 2009, the Eagles beat Canada in the first of a two-game series, only to lose by a larger margin a week later. But they then beat Uruguay in a two-game series to qualify for 2011. It was essentially the same story in 2013 for the 2015 RWC, although Canada won two close qualifiers before the Eagles tied Uruguay in game 1 and won in game 2.
