West Shore Helps RugbyPa Kick Off
The RugbyPa HS season is finally moving along as several teams saw action this past weekend.
West Shore United started the season missing all-state hooker Alex Katherman due to an injury, but that didn't stop them from putting the Chambersburg Trojans to the sword in the Club Gold Division.
West Shore came into the match itching to play rugby as quite a few of their scheduled matches this season have been canceled due to the brutal winter weather. The latest cancelation was Friday night’s scheduled match that was supposed to take place against Calvert Hall in Baltimore, Md.
Against Cambersburg, West Shore outside center Marvis Barrientos scored three tries on the day, while fullback Gage Shackelford and flanker Kysheem Johnson scored two each. Six other West Shore United players would touch down on the day in a complete team effort. Hooker Nick Centurione had a monster game with several long runs, solid defense and excellent play in the set pieces. He was rewarded for his hard work with the last try of the match. Props Jeremy Kirk and Ben Wasson were also rock solid in defense and in loose play with Kirk scoring a try and Wasson making bruising tackles throughout the match. West Shore won 81-0.
Also in RugbyPa, Kutztown opened their account with a 19-10 win over Hibernians. West Chester also won, beating North Philly 41-7.
In the single-school divisions, St. Joe's Prep beat LaSalle 35-12, and it was 35-12 also for Father Judge over Cardinal O'Hara. Burrell opened their season 55-5 winners over Woodland Hills, while Fox Chapel beat PT Rugby 36-0, and West Allegheny beat Moon Area 40-10.
