West Carroll Starts Strong in EGRL
West Carroll has the quickest start going in the Elite Girls Rugby League, bumping out to 2-0 and tops in the EGRL Central.
Having already defeated Doylestown and North Bay, West Carroll has also beaten Charlotte Cardinals in a non-conference game, but faltered against a very tough Morris side.
While there is plenty of rugby to be played among these high-level clubs, the Marauders are already into the EGRL playoffs.
Like most girls clubs, West Carroll is still trying to rebuild numbers after COVID, but they returned 11 starters from their 2022 team—even so they only have four seniors. it's been a young team for a while.
"We are a fast and athletic side looking to be very active at the breakdown," said Assistant Coach Brian Melody.
Rebecca Balladares and Layla Cox have become a solid combination in the midfield, while at scrumhalf and flyhalf Kiernan Myles and Lily Myers run a snappy attack
"To come out of the gate with convincing EGRL wins against Doylestown and North Bay validate the hard work these girls are putting in," said Melody. "The vision of the EGRL and the growing platform it provides the players is amazing. The teams push each other on the pitch and have a great respect for each other off of it. It will be exciting to see how the spring plays out leading up to the playoff weekend in June."
West Carroll hosts Corning this weekend.
Aspetuck is looking to make a splash in the EGRL North and beat Vienna in a pre-conference-play warmup. Morris is waiting for them. Defending EGRL champions, Morris is the only team to beat West Carroll and they also have beaten Greenwich twice. This coming weekend Aspetuck and Morris will face off in a curtain-raiser for Rugby New York vs Rugby ATL in Major League Rugby on Sunday.
Doylestown meanwhile rebounded to beat Knightmares in an in-state league game.
