This Weekend in Girls HS Rugby

Washington state leader Kent put down 65 points last weekend and get the bye in week two.

California has been active for weeks, but the rest of the country is catching up. A couple of states kick off their league seasons this weekend while others play their warm-up tournament in Tennessee.

The game to watch in all of girls high school rugby occurs in Northern California. Looking to rally from an unexpected 24-12 loss to Pleasanton last Saturday, Sacramento returns to the Bay Area this weekend to face Danville. The Lady Oaks hope to repeat the Cavaliers’ efforts, taking on the No. 2 team in the country at home, and certainly have the tools to do it. The leadership is rooted in the Hingano sisters, who are fresh off the All American 7s tour to Las Vegas (Leti was on the side that won the LVI Girls HS Elite trophy). If the Zons bring all of their talent – including Mele Tausinga, Anna Polaulu, Maryjane Pasioles and Malieti Haungatau – then they’ll be well suited for a great game.

The only other Gold Division game is Sierra Foothills vs. Rio Linda. In the six-team Silver Division, Alameda plays Pleasanton, and Berkeley heads to Silicon Valley.

In Southern California, Fullerton hosts South Bay, while ICEF plays a non-league game against Desert Sands. In the Green division, Dead Rabbits play Lady Aztec Warriors and Poway takes on Tri-City. Below are the standings as reported on SoCal Youth's Web site.

Gold Division W L T PF PA BP Total
Fallbrook 2 0 0 90 10 2 10
ICEF 2 0 0 93 15 1 9
Fullerton 0 1 0 15 55 0 0
South Bay 0 1 0 10 50 0 0
Back Bay 0 2 0 0 78 0 0

Green Division W L T PF PA BP Total
Tri-City (1F) 2 0 0 68 0 2 10
Lady Aztec Warriors 1 0 0 29 17 1 5
Dead Rabbits 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
Poway 0 1 0 17 29 0 0
Desert Sands 0 1 0 0 40 0 0
Lady Aztecs 0 (1F) 1 0 0 28 -1 -1

In the Pacific Northwest, Oregon kicks off its league season with five 15s matches and a round robin at North Albany Middle School. In fact, there is a three-team round robin comprised of 35-minute games every weekend. This Saturday, we’ll get a first look at:

Columbia County vs. Grant
Reynolds vs. North Clackamas
Centennial vs. Cleveland
South Metro vs. Canby
Lady Barbarians vs. Battle Ground

In the round robin, Linn Benton, Valley Panthers, and Highlanders will ease into the league season.

Washington’s top team, Kent, gets the weekend off after opening the season with a 65-7 win over Budd Bay. All American Emily Prentice led with 24 points on four tries and two conversions. Paige Wyatt scored three tries, while Finau Tamaivena (2), Emmy Link and Megan Dupree also dotted down. Leah Ingold added three conversions. Budd Bay will look to rebound against Rainier Plateau, which defeated Shelton 26-0 last weekend.

Utah gets underway with two games: Herriman hosts Alphas, and United plays Thunder. United finished second with an overall 14-5 record during the SBRO's first-ever fall 7s season. The team to watch is Orem, and they’re still dormant.

The Mid-Atlantic teams were supposed to take the field this weekend in a highly anticipated Frostbite tournament, but the event was canceled, ironically, by bad weather. It would have been a good warm-up for nationally ranked teams like Morris, Doylestown, Downingtown, North Bay and West End, but their seasons will start up in a couple of weeks.

Fortunately, the U19 Nash Bash escaped full closure since it had both Saturday and Sunday with which to play. The 15-team competition is highlighted by Tennessee champion Maryville, which was by far the strongest team at the tournament last year. Now All American 7s captain McKenzie Hawkins is leading another strong Tennessee side, and this weekend will indicate just how strong.

Ohio state champion St. Joseph’s and rival Lakewood are both bringing two sides to the tournament, so watch for these two teams and the depth they’re cultivating. Pennsylvania is represented by Moon Area and North Penn; Carmel comes from Indiana; and the Chiefs of Illinois accompany six teams from Tennessee (Brentwood, Maryville, Riverdale, Storm, Tribe, Warren County).

This weekend's results will surely affect the rankings, which will be updated next week.
