The USA's mid-week side left its mark at the Gnoll Tuesday, in a 46-20 loss to Wales Development.

Report by Scott Compton for USA Rugby/Press Coverage

The Eagles scored three tries while several other attacking forays and gritty defence from the USA gave a side of rising Welsh stars a healthy challenge.

"We asked the boys to give us 80 minutes tonight, and they did," said head coach Duncan Hall. "We made mistakes, but there were long periods of good rugby as well. We wanted to measure ourselves against strong opponents, and several players stood out for us tonight. Some will challenge for test spots."

While a strong second quarter put Wales Development in control of the match, the USA continued to fight in the second half, scoring two of their tries after the break.

The Welsh got off to an ominous start, scoring out wide after just one minute. But the US side bounced back immediately. Some slick work in the centres put flanker Alex Magleby into space and some more quick hands saw wing Jovesa Naivalu finish in the 5th minute.

While the Welsh scored again just ten minutes later, flyhalf Link Wilfley kept the USA in touch with a penalty about halfway through the first period- the Welsh Development side guilty of pulling down the American maul.

The Wales Development team, captained by well-known international Craig Quinnell, then put together three tries before the halftime whistle, and at34-10, the final result was secure.

But the Eagles were not done. A good period of possession and pressure before the half ended with Naivalu bundled into touch just shy of the Welsh line and more was to come in the second spell. The USA mid-weekers came out after the whistle with their determination undiminished. And while the Welsh professionals were efficient in finishing their chances, the Eagles worked hard to finish their opportunities.

Towards the end of the second half, the USA were rewarded for a sustained attack when hooker Robbie Flynn barged over. And the Eagles' final try came from David Care in the last moments of the game. Again the US side was on the attack, and the flanker charged down a would-be Welsh clearing kick.

The Eagles end their tour at Millennium Stadium Saturday with a full international against Wales.
