Vienna Gets By Fort Hunt in Virginia
In a clash of the two strongest HS club teams in Virginia, Vienna held off Fort Hunt 19-10.
"It was a super-physical game," said Fort Hunt Head Coach Dale Roach. "Strong defense from both teams and hard running. We look forward to seeing them again in the playoffs."
"Fort Hunt has improved a ton this year and has some big strong athletes," said Vienna Head Coach Kendall Erickson. "But we must have been penalized over 25 times. Our boys lack of discipline and unforced errors is frustrating."
No. 8 Juan Cat scored the first and the last of Vienna's three tries, while Andrew Evan returned from injury and scored as well. Camden Erickson converted two.
Erickson echoed Roach's observations about the power of the defensive tackling. But he added that his team needs to show more.
"We will take the W, but our Vienna boys better show up at practice ready to get a lot better. Honestly our team is punching far below our weight class. We have all kinds of potential yet to be fulfilled. I believe if every boy increases their commitment level and desire to get better and lock in, we are capable of having a special year. No growth in our comfort zone and no comfort in the growth zone."
Next up for both of these teams is the Gonzaga Tournament this coming weekend. Fort Hunt is in a pool with Charlotte Cardinals and Atlanta Youth Rugby. Vienna is in a pool with Gonzaga White and St. Andrews, which is touring from South Africa.
"This is a huge opportunity and honor," said Erickson.
