The USA U18s are settling in South America as they prepare for two matches against Uruguay and a match against Buenos Aires Academy U18s.

The players arrived in Buenos Aires, Argentina on the 4th of July and hit the pitch to work out the travel stiffness before going through the obligatory team meetings.

Day Two was the first main training with a two sessions focusing on attack. In the morning the players broke up into positional units with the forwards nailing down their lineout and the backs working on attack shape and first-phase attack of scrums.

In the afternoon, in the rain, they started to put the attack together as a team, adding in exits and transition play.

Day 3 included some travel as the team took the ferry across the Rio de la Plata to Montevideo, Uruguay. It's a two-and-a-half-hour trip and gave the team a nice view of the area.

In Montevideo they settled into a new hotel and then had time for a defensive session.

The forwards worked on the scrum and the backs worked on set piece and defense around the edges. They added in transition defense.

So that moved into Tuesday, July 7, which is Day 4.

This was a double-sessions day, with a morning live scrimmage as the team started to put in more layers of attack.

"The players are doing great," said assistant coach Matt Wagner. "They have a ton of information and detail to learn on the rugby side, but they’re picking it up well. They’re also learning a lot about professionalism and standards as it applies to the off field elements—medical, recovery, communication, film review and study, how to carry themselves as representatives of the US on a foreign tour, and more. There are tremendous attitudes in this group and they’re all super keen to learn and ask great questions—a lot of questions!"

The staff has been pleased to see how the players are forming a team. Players are having a good time, joking around and gelling quickly.

The squad overal has been divided into mini teams for games and competition in between trainings and also during training. These in-squad competitions keep players engaged and also assist in team-building.

The coaches have modeled the team culture after USA Head Coach Scott Lawrence's "Moonshot" theme. Lawrence has talked about the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions as steps toward the USA goals. The U18s have ambraced themselves as the T38, the Northrop T38 Talon, a supersonic jet from the early 1960s that allowed astronauts to train for high G forces.

"They’ve bought in on that and it’s a really cool and relevant piece that many of them will (hopefully) carry onto the senior team in the coming years," said Wagner.

Things have started well, and Saturday brings the first match.
