Union Starts Strong in Oregon

Union wins a lineout.

The Union Titans of Oregon began their season with a convincing 56-7 victory over a good Portland Pumas team on Saturday.

Tries were scored by Tre'Von Turner, Jake Burchett, Tyler Dionne, Tate Nelson, Caleb Browning, Austin  Holloway,  Chris Berry, & Brendon Curle. The Union Titans retained most of their players from their first season last year, when the average age was just under 16. In their first year the Titans went on to play for the Oregon Varsity (singe-school) Cup Championship, losing narrowly to a very experienced Prairie team. However, nine players on the Union team made the Oregon Red Hawks All Star teams last year, five of which made up the entire tight five of the Red Hawk JV team.  All those players not only went on to play at the Great Northwest CHallenge, but many players also played through the summer and fall 7s season.

Union went undefeated i Oregon's fall 7s series, and scrmhalf/flyhalf Brendon Curle was invited to the HS All American winter camp.

All of Union's 2014 players have returned for this year with the goal of returning to the Cup final. With the start of the single-school season in Oregon being later than previous as Rugby Oregon tries to align its season with the schools' official sports calendar, Union was able to spend more time working on conditioning and structure of play.

Coach David Curle also attended HS All American Coach Salty Thompson's EIRA workshop, hosted by Rugby Oregon. What he learned there has helped Union start strong.

Union’s victory over the Portland Pumas came on the back of excellent work by the forwards in the breakdowns and in scrums and lineouts. In the second half, good passing and interplay between the forwards and backs saw several different players score.

Also moving to 1-0 in the Rugby Oregon Varsity League was Newberg, which defeated Prairie 19-0, and Reynolds, 49-15 winners over Oregon City went 2-0 in shortened round-robin games (in Rugby Oregon those games count for half points, so Oregon City got 2 points for each win, while Union, Reynolds, and Newberg got 4 points for a ful-length victory). Oregon City defeated Canby 39-7 and Summit 31-0.

Union faces Prairie and Battle Ground in a three-team round-robin on Friday.
