UCSD Makes an Early Statement at Own Tourney
Keep an eye on UC San Diego women after they put in a solid showing in their season-opening Scrum by the Sea tournament.
A classic tournament on the women's collegiate schedule, SxTS welcomes teams from the West Coast in a series of shortened games.
In the end Arizona State beat UCSD 14-12 in the final, and that's a good showing for the Sun Devils, but we're taking a look at the Tritons because they weren't necessarily expected to be in that final. In addition, UCSD beat ASU 14-7 in the opening day.
They followed that up with victories over Claremont Colleges and UCLA.
"The team this year is looking very promising," said Line Luedi, forwards captain. "We have a lot more returning players compared to last year meaning we have a much larger pool of experience to pick from. The rookies this year have been incredible so far as well, you’d never be able to tell a lot of them had only started practicing in September."
One of those rookies was Mia Taylor, who is a freshman and led the team in tries over the weekend. The flyhalf was a standout for Belmont HS in Massachusetts and played within the Freejacks Academy system, with Mystic River's touring side, and is in the USA pathway. She earned 8x8Sports Player of the Week honors, too.
"Her quick decisions and footwork has led her to become our top try scorer across the games we’ve played," said Luedi
As for the tournament.
"Scrum by the Sea was by any means an absolute joy to see the team compete in," enthused Luedi. "Unfortunately we fell short against ASU in the finals losing 12-14. A tough but well fought game. Seeing as how our team finished at the bottom of the pools last year this was by all means an amazing accomplishment and really sets the tone for our season this year. We’re aiming to win."
