While the men’s college teams play in the Storer Classic this weekend at UCLA, there’s another part of the tournament that boasts a pretty impressive lineup of teams.
The Boys HS tournament that has been a part of the Storer Classic from the beginning will include some of the top teams from California. SFGG, Lamorinda, Back Bay, and Granite Bay are part of the HS Storer Classic slate. In addition, Danville, which finished 3rd in the Boys Club NIT last year, Santa Monica, which finished 2nd, and Snow Canyon, possibly the strongest team in Utah last season, will also be there.
Of those, Danville might well be the one to watch. They defeated United and the San Diego Mustangs in the NIT, and lost to the eventual champs Royal Irish Rugby (aka Cathedral) 12-7 in a game where Danville allowed no tries.
They’ve got some big boys up front such as Nate Becker and Matt Snyder, both tall and athletic, and accomplished in other sports.
“We’ll be stronger this year, with more speed and more experience,” said Danville Head Coach Jon Straka. “We’ve always been a forward-oriented team, but I think we’re more balanced this year.”
