Texas Leage Out Of The Blocks
Texas Leage Out Of The Blocks
The Rugby Texas has started its season with a series of non-league games giving some teams a chance to warm up.
This weekend, Dallas Jesuit plays St. Thomas out of Houston, while St. Pius X visits Westlake.
West Houston is at Strake Jesuit, while Katy is at Lamar.
These are all chances for teams to test themselves. Westlake vs Pius X looks to be the tightest of these games, but it's really just an opportunity for teams to see what they have. Pius has graduated some key players, but could be brining in some new young talent.
Usually Texas brings a little surprise in part because of how competitive each game is, and in part because the schedule has large gaps in it during which some teams seem to lose, or gain, momentum.
Rock Rugby remains a bit of an unknown. The Round Rock, Texas team has shaken up some opponents but hasn't found playoff love yet. Could this year be a change? As program director Paul McCartney also spends time developing his select-side 7s program. Is that a distraction? Players say no.

Allen is quietly getting ready and could be a contender this year, while the Dallas Harlequins Colts should build nicely through the spring.
Woodlands bring back all-star talents Tom Dixon at No. 8 and Maddox King at center and were expected to show their stuff this past weekend at Lake Travis, but Lake Travis is just getting started so it ended up being a scrimmage. Still, with Woodlands playing top teams from Mexico, Missouri, New Mexico, and Tennessee, they will show their quality.
While many expect Kay and Cy Fair to be solid, one team to watch could be Strake Jesuit. The 2018-19 D2 winners, Strake has built from there and played a warmup round-robin last weekend that they controlled nicely.
