The Texas Boys HS league begins in earnest this weekend, and on the single-school side state champs Westlake are already looking strong.
Westlake took on 2014 club champs Woodlands in a preseason warmup this past weekend, and Westlake won convincingly 56-0.
Westlake Head Coach Jason Spodick said he expected the game to be a measuring stick for his squad, and if that’s so, they should feel confident about the season ahead.
“We have lots of new faces on varsity for us, but overall team experience is good,” Spodick said. Westlake graduated 26 seniors from last year, and 23 of them were on the state championship roster. However, it’s nice to have HS All American flanker Bobby Butchofsky back. Rookie senior Andrew Marsh joins Butchofsky on the back row and while he’s new to the game, he’s a good athlete and learning well. Watch out for him.
They look good at halfback, and clearly are working together well for so early in the season.
Meanwhile, Woodlands beat Plano a week before but were stung this past week.
Head Coach Beck said he was looking at the early games as scrimmages to test out new players. Like Westlake, Woodlands had a big turnover in their squad, but it seems Beck has more questions about who will slot in where.
Meanwhile, Dallas Jesuit has looked strong in opening games while Allen, Richardson, and St. Thomas all have posted impressive scores. St. Thomas and St. Pius both beat touring Louisiana team Brother Martin over the weekend.
