Teams Set For 2021 Boys HS National Championships
The Boys HS National Championships invitees have been finalized.
Despite the event being moved in terms of timing (from May to June) and in terms of location (from Salt Lake City to Kansas City), nearly 40 teams applied for the 24 spots. Interestingly, far fewer School teams applied as opposed to HS Club teams. This is likely due in part to the timing of the event, and also to travel restrictions put in by schools on their sports teams.
But it has been a trend over the last few years that more clubs than schools are applying.
Some teams that had seen success in previous years—2019 Club champions Back Bay and 2019 Tier 2 champions Rocky Mountain—opted not to apply.
The top three school teams from the 2019 tournament return in Jesuit, Herriman, and Gonzaga, while the 2nd through 5th club teams—Royal Irish, Charlotte, San Diego, and Danville—also return.
There is one spot to be decided, with a game between Marin and SFGG this spring deciding which of those Northern California teams compete. IN addition, some states that aren't normally represented in the National Championships will be there. The Woodlands, which was slated to compete in 2020 before the event was canceled, represents Texas, and Germantown out of Tennessee brings the Volunteer State back in the mix.
Tempe comes in representing Arizona, and while we've seen plenty of Utah teams at Nationals, this will be a first for Genesis, which got there by virtue of beating United two weeks ago. The SOC Raptors out of Southern California also are a new face at Nationals.
Here's there list. The Single School bracket will remain as-is since it's eight teams. The remaining 16 HS Club teams will be split into the HS Club bracket and the Tier 2 bracket pending results from later this spring.
