Storer Classic Good Start for Some HS Teams
Several high school teams got some preseason work in at the Storer Classic last week at the UCLA campus.
Among the best-showers was defending NorCal club champs Danville, which defeated defending Utah single-school winners Snow Canyon 27-12 in a tough match that was 7-7 at halftime.
Danville went on to beat Santa Monica 17-3, and upcoming NorCal rivals Lamorinda 33-5.
No. 8 and captain Austin Cowdery was a force and quite possibly the best of the lot at the tournament. Danville captain Keanu Andrade was injured early, which was a shame, as he played only a small part in the action. As a result Cowdery was asked to step in the lead the team and take over as kicker. He did all very well.
Archbishop Riordan was another Northern California team that showed relatively well, beating Torrey Pines 28-0 and pushing Snow Canyon 19-7 before running out a less experience group in a 15-7 loss to Santa Monica.
Sam Tofi was a big scorer for Riordan, while his younger brother, Folsaitu showed well and Josh Wells stepped in nicely at flyhalf.
For Snow Canyon, the win over Riordan and the close loss to Danville, along with a B-side match loss to Lamorinda, was what they wanted coming out of the snows of Utah (hey, they have snow in their name … it’s cold in the desert).
“We were pleased with our performance against Danville,” said Snow Canyon’s Jay Day. “We felt we had a better first half than second half, but we've only been practicing for a week so it was a good first run for us. Conditioning and mental toughness were lacking in our second half, and full credit to Danville - they outplayed us in the second half.”
After their Bs went 1-1 against Lamorinda and Torrey Pines, Snow Canyon finished it all up with the win over Riodan.
“We were able to win and get reserves in as well,” said Day. “We love the UCLA Storer classic and can't say enough good about Coach Stewart and his staff. It’s first rate.”
Senior hooker and No. 8 Joe Servati looked solid for Snow Canyon, while returning outside center Kody Jacobsen showed good handling skills and strong runner. Flyhalf Dylan Parry, scrumhalf Brecken Anderson, and fullback Andy Day all had good days and Snow Canyon has legitimate reason to expect good things this year.
