St. Bonaventure Hosts HS Tournament
St. Bonaventure University is hosting a high school rugby tournament this coming weekend, the Bonnies HS Boys Challenge.
Participating this weekend are four teams from Western New York: Kenmore, Orchard Park, Canisius, and Fairport.
The teams will play shortened games of 20-minute halves, with rolling subs allowed.
“We are really looking forward to some early season rugby," said Kenmore Head Coach Steve Caruana. "We sometimes struggle to get outside this early with the weather. Bonnie's will be a great venue and the chance for us to see what kind of team we are putting together this year before the league starts.”
Canisius is looking to make a splash, with seniors Doar Doar, Jack Wiles, Jake Millitelo, and Jake Ostrowski.
"This tournament is a great way to kick-start the season and we are looking forward to it," said Canisius RFC Forwards Coach Kevin Wiles.
Fairport graduated 32 seniors last year. The defending Rugby NY Western Conference champs still have some experience. Luke Goodwin is an imposing runner in the forwards, while Hunter Totsline is a force on defense. In the backs, Rhys Lawther and Chris Ayer will be difficult to contain.
And Orchard Park is looking to challenge the likes of Fairport. “We're really excited about the number of returning players we have this year," said Orchard Park Assistant Coach Anthony Crispo. "We played very close games last year and we think we're ready to take the next step this year. The players have really enjoyed starting training earlier this year and look forward to seeing the results at the St Bonaventure tournament.”
