Southeastern Louisiana Retains Magnolia Cup
In 95-degree heat Saturday in Ruston, La. Southeastern Louisiana University won their third game of the season, defeating the Louisiana Tech University Bulldogs 41-22 at Tech’s famous “The Joe” Stadium.
This game was for the Magnolia Cup challenge trophy between the two.
The Bulldogs scored first and managed to keep the Lions under constant pressure for the first 20 minutes on the narrow football field pitch. The Lions forward pack broke out with tries by No. 8 Jean-Paul St. Pierre, hooker Allen Pennington, and lock Connor Hogg. To cap off that run of points scrumhalf Corban Saucier notched his first of the season. The Bulldogs bounced back and went over just before the half ended to make it 22-12 at halftime.
The second half opened with another Louisiana Tech try to bring the Bulldogswithin a try at 22-17. But freshman flyhalf Tyler Anclade found some space to run and also help turn the field position tables around with his boot. He repeatedly found holes in the defense to put his backs through. Wing Mikey Trapan scored two tries one after another, and then wing Michael Kennedy sped down the touchline for 20 meters and offloaded to lock Conner Hogg for his second try of the match.
That finished it off. For the season, 12 different Lions have scored Southeastern Louisiana's 21 tries, and they continue to score in a variety of ways.
Next up for Southeastern Louisiana is University of Louisiana Lafayette in Hammond, La.
