SoCal Varsity White Playoff Picture Clearing
Two games this past weekend decided conference winners (or as good as did), and we've got a few more coming this weekend as the Southern California Varsity White quarterfinals loom.
Here's how things went down this weekend:
LA Conference
A tough Warren HS team went into this weekend 2-1, while Wilson sat 3-0. Warren had a shot at chasing 1st with a win over Wilson, almost pulled it off. Wilson had to battle and won 14-7.
"They played an awesome game for a new team," said Wilson Head Coach Tony Balasuriya of Warren. "It's the biggest effort [in a losing team] I've seen in a while. It was a nailbiter."
Warren's massive defensive effort kept the game in down until a late Wilson try in the second half—and even then. Wilson was plagued by some inaccuracy with the ball in hand. Center Ethan Moxley scored his team's first try, and wing Jack Gentile scored the second. Tha put Wilson up 14-0 before Warren got on the board and had a shot to tie it.
"It's good to have a close game to wake up the boys," added Balasuriya.
So this puts Wilson in command in LA and assured them of a playoff spot with one weekend to go.
LA Conference Standings:
Wilson 4-0
Warren 2-2
California 2-2
St. Anthony 0-4
(St. Anthony is actually a strong team, but because they don't have enough players from one school on their roster, their games are forfeits. In reality, this is a tight conference from top to bottom.)
OC Coast
Servite and Los Alamitos will meet this coming weekend to decide the conference winner. Both are 3-0. Correction on one other result— Corona Del Mar in fact beat Marina to move to 2-2. We had Marina winning, which was a mistake.
This was a good opening season for Corona Del Mar, going 2-2, including a nine-point loss to Los Al.
OC Coast Standings:
Servite 3-0
Los Alamitos 3-0
Corona Del Mar 2-2
Marina 1-3
San Juan 0-3
OC Inland
This weekend brings a clash of 3-0 teams in this league, too. Corona Centennial, which has been pretty impressive all winter, takes on Murrieta Valley, which beat Norco 55-15 Saturday to remain undefeated in league play.
Pictured above, Murrieta has enjoyed some impressive play up front from the likes of Big Joe Vanbuskirk, Shawn Kealoha, Jaden Dylan, and Luke Shull, while Asher Hannon leads the team in tries and points, and Keegan Hannon is close behind, with Michael Harkins, Makoa Tafua, Marcus Nguyen all kinds of toruble in the backs.
OC Inland Standings:
Murrieta Valley 3-0
Corona Centennial 3-0
Great Oak 1-2
Norco 0-3
Roosevelt 0-3
San Diego North
Carlsbad won big in a shutout over Valley Center to remain unbeaten. Isaac Tinoisamoa, DJ Young, and Solomon Williams led a potent Carlsbad attack that clinched 1st. Carlsbad has Rancho Bernardo left on the schedule, but at 3-0 can't be caught.
San Diego North Standings:
Carlsbad 3-0
Jaguars 3-1
Rancho Bernardo 1-1
Mission Vista 0-2
Alta Vista 0-3
San Diego South
Defending champs La Jolla won 54-12 over previously unbeaten Westview to secure 1st. Despite dealing with some injuries, La Jolla has won big in every game.
"I haven't had my full 15 in any game and I am not sure I will," said Head Coach and former Eagle Bill Leversee. "But we've been able to get some guys, even players new to the game, to fill in and they've been looking good."
Two of those newcomers are Alessandro DeMoreno and Diego Cortes, both standouts for the La Jolla football team and who have emerged as potent attackers in the backline.
San Diego South Standings:
La Jolla 4-0
Westview 3-1
Point Loma 1-1
Del Norte 1-2
Mater Dei 0-2
Patrick Henry 0-3
Playoff Picture
The five conference winners all get a berth into the quarterfinals, plus the three best second-place teams. Currently here's how that looks:
La Jolla, Carlsbad, and Wilson are in the playoffs for sure.
The winner of Servite vs Los Alamitos and the winner of Corona Centennial vs Murrieta Valley will also get an automatic spot.
So the chase then might be on for those three other spots. Westview played Wilson close, but also lost by a larger margin to Wilson and so have two league losses. It's likely that the loser of the two crucial games this weekend will make the playoffs anyway unless tey get badly blown out.
After that, Westview, which at least scored points on La Jolla while Jaguars (also 3-1) failed to score against Carlsbad, might have a case.
