SoCal Latest - Varsity White

It’s still all to play for in the Southern California Varsity White division, but Dana Hills remains the team to watch in the Los Angeles Conference.

Dana moved to 3-0 after soundly beating Palos Verdes 61-7 this weekend. It was an especially poignant game for Dana Hills as their Head Coach, Ian Ibbetson, learned Friday that his father, Victor Ibbetson, has passed away. The teams held a moment of silence before the game, and then Dana Hills put together an outstanding display to win convincingly.

Meanwhile, View Park Prep stayed in the hunt with a very difficult 14-12 defeat of St. John Bosco.

It was a hugely physical clash between the big, thundering Bosco team and the slighter, speedier View Park squad.

“No one knew if they were hitting a prop or a center or a winger,” joked View Park Head Coach David Hughes of the size of his team’s opponents.

Defense held sway in the opening half and the teams changed ends tied 0-0. In the second half, the game started to open up. View Park lock Ronald Campbell crashed over after several phases, and then Jabari Fernandes jinked his way through and just squeezed over to make it 14-0 - Myles Conley converted both tries.

But Bosco replied, as Christian Mitchell and Damon McCaskill - both players who had suited up for the ICEF club, also coached by Highes, scored. Bosco managed to convert one, and View Park won 14-12.

“Great game,” said Hughes. “They will cause a lot of problems in the league. They are just a massive set of very athletic boys. We were delighted to get away with a win especially as our two strongest ball carriers were away this weekend.”

View Park improved to 1-1 in league play. Mira Costa also won, but it was a non-league game against the Granite Hill HS Dead Rabbits of the Inland Conference.

The long trip into the desert made for a sluggish start for Mira Costa, and it wasn’t until 17 minutes in that they got much going - inside center Justus Tavai exploited a gap and scored from 12 meters out.  Lock Cole Hunter went over soon thereafter, and tries from hooker Juwan Johnson and two from No. 8 Jonah Tavai capped off a 33-3 victory.

Johnson was named player of the game, a game in which the Mira Costa forwards controlled the tempo.

In the San Diego Conference, HTH/Point Loma won big again, beating Mission Vita 45-5 to improve to 2-0. San Pasqual also is 2-0 after beating Patrick Henry.
