Fallbrook continued their run with an impressive 40-22 defeat of the San Diego Mustangs to move to 2-0 in the SoCal Club South Gold conference.

Despite being stretched for players, Fallbrook continues to win, and have put aside both Back Bay and the Mustangs. They are now set to face the San Diego Young Aztecs, and a win there April 11 will give them a second league title this season.

There are still playoffs to go, but Fallbrook’s effort so far should be recognized.

Also worth recognition is Los Angeles. Bolstered by players from Mira Costa and St. John Bosco, the LA team is a nice mixture of athletes. Coach Paul Breen has his squad working on basic skills - tackling, passing - and has developed a long-standing relationship with several talented athletes. HS All American Justus Tevai has been playing well for them, and so has college football recruit Ian Hall. Small in stature but solid and strong, Derek Rabot has been a find and Juwan Johnson is excellent at hooker.

Already LA has beaten Santa Monica and Belmont Shore, and after a forfeit win over Santa Clarita, they are 3-0 with South Bay and Pasadena left.

“I don’t know how we’ll do or what will happening playoffs,” said Breen. “We’re just trying to get these players to be better rugby players, and enjoy this great game.”

So it looks as if Fallbrook and LA will be in the club playoffs, with the Young Aztecs, Santa Monica, and South Bay also in the mix for the quarterfinals.

And then in the Tri-Counties, there’s San Luis Obispo. SLO used to play in Northern California before starting their own mid-state league in 2014. This year San Luis Obispo is 5-0 and looks to be a team that could surprise the rivals further south.

“We have a good core of seniors that have played varsity and took their lumps as freshmen,” …said coach Paul Cappellano. “We are a senior-laden team that has gained a lot of experience.”

Grady Ahern, Joe Bravo, Dante Cappellano, Ryan Griffin, Larry Schriehans, and James Zanoli ave all played well and garnered experienced in select sides.

SLO lost to Back Bay 48-24 in a non-league match, but have won most of their in-conference games by large margins.
