SoCal Finals to be Decided

The Rancho Bernardo Broncos bucked off Citrus Valley last week and look ahead to Mira Costa this week. Jay Coulter photo.

The Southern California leagues are coming down to the wire, with the Varsity Red still in question and the Varsity White down to semifinals.

In the Varsity White, no one was happy with the fact that University City v View Park had to be decided by a series of coin tosses after the game was found to be a tie, not a View Park win.

Nonetheless, it worked out for UC, as they won the coin tosses 3-2 and host St. John Bosco this weekend. Bosco knows what it’s like to play a tough game with View Park, having beaten them 24-20 at the beginning of the season.

Bosco is 6-1 in league and playoff action, although two of those wins were by forfeit (played, but not official). Their win over Dead Rabbits last week was a very closely-contested one, and they will need to be better and more clinical to take care of the Honey Badgers.

Mira Costa has been almost untouchable this year, but against some more accomplished offensive teams (Bosco, View Park) they have leaked points.

Rancho Bernardo was dominant in last week’s quarterfinals and seems to be firing nicely, having 5-1 since they opened the season with a loss (a game they played without their football players). But that one loss was against University City, 20-12.

Mira Costa and Rancho Bernardo have only one common opponents - Alta Vista, and Mira Costa won that game 43-5, while Rancho won 29-12.

This should be a high-scoring game, but as UC showed, Rancho can be frustrated with smart defense and a good territorial game.

Meanwhile, in Varsity Red, La Costa Canyon has clinched a spot in the championship game and has Poway this weekend.

The question is, who will the Mavericks play? Torrey Pines has a point on Cathedral and the head-to-head tiebreak should they end up tie on standings points. That is a distinct possibility, as Cathedral could well get a bonus-point win against Fallbrook, a task that looks tougher for Torrey Pines against St. Augustine.

But all Torrey Pines needs to do is beat St. Augustine - not an easy task. but doable - to cap off an impressive rise from rebuilding team of players unsure of themselves through four very close league wins and a chance at the title once again.

The four Torrey Pines wins in league this year have been by an average of less than 7 points.
