SJU Leads MARC But JMU Awaits

SJU is steadily improving.

St. Joseph's leads the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Conference with a 6-0-1 record after beating Delaware over the weekend.

The Hawks how look to secure their position when they play James Madison on November 12. JMU won also, beating Maryland 36-34 to improve to 5-0. (JMU's game with Rowan was hurricaned out and will likely not be made up.)

St. Joe's has improved markedly through the season, with new Head Coach Mike Williams instilling a unified, family-like mentality for the team's culture.

The team has been working hard on executing basic skills and that approach, along with a focus on winning the set piece, has created a team-first attitude, say players. There's no one star; this is a team of equals.

"In our first seven games our rolling maul has been very powerful and has led to a handful of tries," said club president and tighthead prop Connor Hohman. "Our scrum has improved immensely from last year; [we were] known as the team that most teams can push over. With the work of forwards coach Ryan Mclean and the assistance of Neil Tunnah, our scrum has turned into a solid platform for our backs to attack, and on defense creating multiple turnovers against the head."

Williams and Tyler Myles have the backs playing nicely together despite losing senior fullback Mario Licciardello to injury in the first game of the season. Licciardello is out for the season, and other backs have suffered long-term injuries. But younger backups have stepped into the fray.

Freshmen wings Seamus Blaney and Matt Kelly were pulled up to the starts 15 and have been very effective

This week Hohman led his side with two tries, with flanker Max Fisher, flyhalf Will Woods, and center Tommy O'Connell touching down once each. Three of those conversions were converted by O'Connell while the defense, for the second weekend in a row, held the opposition to just the one try.

Elsewhere, Salisbury won in impressive fashion 36-10 to improve to 4-3. West Chester also won and now at 2-2-2 with a good shot at 3rd place.
