The Saint Mary's Gaels defeated Cal Poly 57-12 Saturday in San Luis Obispo to move to 6-0 in the California Conference.

Gaels Head Coach Tim O'Brien was relatively happy with the showing, saying they started brilliantly, scoring three tries in the first 20 minutes and taking control early.

However, the intensity eased off somewhat through into halftime, and that might, in part, have been because of the heat—it was over 80 degrees and even though this was California it hasn't been that warm for a while.

"We had some turnovers and periods of weird play," said O'brien. "And overall I was pretty disappointed with our defense."

But at the same time Saint Mary's punched up their performance in the second half and pulled away from a tough Cal Poly side.

Leading the way for Saint Mary's was their front row of John Wilson, Nate Deegan, and John Henry Rouse, who were outstanding. Referee Josh Musonero also drew praise for his work in the game.

Overall the Gaels' set piece was very strong, but they were also held up in-goal four times, an indication of a bit of impatience in scoring position.

There was also a larger aspect to this fixture. The programs played three full sides, with 54 Gaels getting on the pitch on the day.

"It was a long day," said O'Brien, "but a good day, and a bit of a throwback to how college rugby used to be."
