RWC Notes, Stats, and Comparisons

Taku Ngwenya in for his third Rugby World Cup try, eight years after his second.

With Pool Play done in the 2015 Rugby World Cup, here are some notes about the tournament as a whole, and the USA.

Chris Wyles tied Mike MacDonald for the most Rugby World Cup appearances, with 11. He also broke Ray Nelson and Kort Schubert's record of tries in World Cups, scoring his 4th against Japan. Taku Ngwenya scored his 3rd RWC try of all time, tying Nelson and Schubert for 2nd.

AJ MacGinty is second all-time in penalties kicked, with seven, and his 25 points in World Cups is 4th all-time among USA players. Wyles, with 33, is second behind Mike Hercus's 77.

The USA went 0-4 for the second time, and winless in a World Cup for the 4th time.

The USA scored 50 points in the four games, and gave up 156 points. That's an average of 12.5, which ranks 5th out of the seven World Cups the USA has attended. They gave up 39 points, which is the second-most, behind 1999. Their average points difference of 26.5 is 5th out of the seven tournaments. Those numbers are somewhat skewed by the one blowout game, but every year had one of those.

As for the rest of the tournament, Japan finished 3-1 but did not qualify for the quarterfinals. The only time anything like that has happened before was 1999, when three teams in Pool D finished 3-1. Luckily for Argentina in that tournament, there was a different playoff system, and as the top 3rd-place team they had a chance to play one more game, which they won, over Ireland, and so made the QFs. The only other times that the pools have not finished in normal order (winner undefeated, 2nd place with one loss, third place with two losses, etc.), is in 2011, when France finished 2-2 but made the quarterfinals anyway, and in 1987, when three teams in Pool 3 were 1-2, and Fiji went through on points difference. And in Pool 4 France and Scotland tied but both went through.

Japan had a superb World Cup, and yet got nothing out of it in that they would have qualified for the 2019 tournament anyway as hosts, and missed out on a quarterfinal spot.

The "Original 8" teams of England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa did not sweep the quarterfinal places, as England bowed out at 2-2. In fact, those eight have made the quarters together only once, in 2003 (South Africa did't participate in 1987 or 1991). Argentina makes the quarterfinals for the last three World Cups in a row, something England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland have not done.

Argentina led pool play with 179 points scored. The USA, with 50, was second to last. Samu Manoa was 2nd in pool play with 57 carries, and 3rd with 27 carries over the gain line. Scotland led with 585 tackles made. The USA was 5th with 503. Fiji led wiht 41 turnovers made. The USA was 16th (tied with England) with 24.
