Playoffs Loom in Maryland Leagues (Updated)
Georgetown Prep continues to put in good performances and ended their season undefeated after beating Perry Street Prep 52-0.
That sets up a Metro Area Varsity Rugby Conference semifinal matchup with Salesianum.
Junior Flyhalf James Lyons continued his try-scoring run, having crossed the line in every game this season. Hoyas overall points leader, fullback Jason Colliton, slotted a half-dozen conversions in the Perry Street match in tough, windy conditions. Prop Jeff Ferrigno, No. 8 Connor Stewart, and fellow back rowers Colin Whalen and Thomas Gates all touched down.
Defensively Georgetown is led by center Pat McCann and hardworking hooker Tommy Cirrito, who have been influential in Prep’s three straight shutouts.
Our Lady of Good Counsel then defeated Perry Street Monday in a game rescheduled from March. That win means Good Counsel plays Gonzaga in the other MAVRC semi.
Those games happen Saturday.
Meanwhile, in the Maryland Independent league, more ties, as Loyola finished first with a 3-0-1 record, and the playoffs start now.
In the club scene in Rugby Maryland, the turmoil in the Baltimore area has had its effect on HS rugby in the region, namely that Tuesday’s playoff game between North Bay and Baltimore Poly had to be postponed due to the curfew in the city.
This makes people wait even longer on what has been the driving question of the year - who is better, North Bay, or Maryland Exiles? The two teams ended the season tied with four wins and one tie (to each other). The tiebreaker for who would finish 1st ended up being points allowed. The Exiles on the tiebreaker by a single point.
A wild finish, but in the end not much of a difference as both are expected to meet again. The Exiles beat West Carroll on Monday 45-13 in their semi, and await North Bay’s result.
Update: North Bay defeated Baltimore Poly 80-3 setting up the final with the Exiles.
