Phoenix Downs South Doyle
Phoenix Rugby wrapped up a successful weekend with a league win over Titans United and then a victory over visiting South Doyle, the defending Tennessee state champion.
Against South Doyle, Phoenix opened strongly and camped out inside South Doyle's 22. South Doyle's defense held for a while, but eventually Phoenix center Tim Voin capped off a nice backline move to touch down. With fullback Ollie Kennett's conversion, Phoenix led 7-0.
That was how the first half ended. Phoenix had other opportunities to score but on penalties opted to kick for touch and take the lineout. South Doyle stymied those chances, and in the second half, the Phoenix players decided to opt for a kick for posts on penalties. Kennett connected on a penalty to make it 10-05, and while Doyle replied immediately with a try, Phoenix then started to expand their lead.
Cristian Calvallo made a break but was stopped just short. However prop Ben Fagg stormed through to make the tryline. Mitchell Blair scored shortly afterward to bring the score to Phoenix 24, South Doyle 5. South Doyle inched closer but Phoenix wing Da’Mon Ingrams, a transfer from the Pleasanton Cavaliers in California, sped in to seal the game. South Doyle got one more, but Phoenix won 31-19.
With out of state wins this season over Charlotte Tigers, Chapin, Charlotte Catholic and South Doyle plus a strong win over in-state rival Titans United, Phoenix has started very well.
