Peninsula Green Wins Again
Peninsula Green continues to play some impressive rugby in Northern California's DI league, defeating Los Gatos 39-17 over the weekend.
The result puts Peninsula Green at 4-0 in league play, and 7-0 overall. Sierra Foothills also won this weekend, beating the Sacramento Eagles 37-19, while CK McClatchy remains unbeaten - they played in the Fullerton tournament this weekend in Southern California and will face Sierra this coming weekend.
For Pen Green, the Beavers set the tenor of the game with very physical defensive and offensive play. The PG defense kept LG's talented athletes from crossing the gainline, and on offense the Beaver forwards continually pushed back the LG defense by running straight, and setting up the backs to exploit gaps.
Center Tavita Mailau started the Pen Green scoring shortly after the start of the game as flyhalf Naima Faulaau set him up on a crash ball, and the Los Gatos defense melted away as he juked his way to the corner. Faulaau then slipped through the LG defense himself to get a try. Los Gatos scored under the posts to bring the score to 12-7, but Peninsula Green put the pressure back on and Tavita Mailau kicked a penalty goal to make it 15-7.
Then the floodgates opened for Peninsula Green, as wing Sione Manukainiu caught the LG defense backing up too slowly on a penalty and slipped in under the Los Gatos tacklers. Within minutes Manukainiu struck again, this time taking the ball at pace and driving his opposite number backwards before going over. After the conversion kick went wide, the Beavers took possession from Los Gatos and speed demon Sami Makaafi on the other wing just plain burned down the touchline to curve in under the posts. Mailau kicked the conversion to make it 32-7 at halftime.
The subs ran on after that and a somewhat speed-shocked Los Gatos team was able to rebound with a try. But it was slow going and it wasn't until the 75th minute that Los Gatos fullback Royce Fisher intercepted a pass to go all the way for his team's third. Erik Faivaila touched down for the final Peninsula Green score after that.
No. 8 Yoshi Warnock was an effective leader for Peninsula Green and captained the team. His physical defense and hard running was impressive. Flanker Bo Mailau made a large contribution with his tackles and runs from the base of the rucks, while scrumhalf Cutler Pons got the ball out quickly to his runners. Pons also spoiled the Los Gatos attack with hard-hitting tackles and harassment of the Los Gatos backs. Leilua Lualemaga was also outstanding with multiple physical tackles and several long runs, one of which set up a Pen Green try.
Peninsula Green leads the Bay Conference in NorCal DI, and really the only team that might challenge the Beavers is North Bay, which rebounded from a rough early loss to Pleasanton to beat Los Gatos and, Saturday, SFGG, to move to 2-1. North Bay takes on Peninsula Green this coming weekend.
