PAC Latest - 2nd Place Up for Grabs

With time winding down in the Arizona State v UCLA PAC Rugby Conference clash Sunday, ASU center Keenan Mayfield scored a try to tie the game, and kicked the conversion to win it, as the Sun Devils took a step closer to potentially finishing 2nd in the conference.

UCLA led 17-10 at halftime and continued to hold the lead late into the game.

“We’re been training really hrs, and I think our fitness showed in the last team minutes,” said ASU Head Coach Gary Lane. “We were able to put UCLA under pressure, and we have some talent in the backs and they just ran really hard.”

ASU scored twice to make it 25-20 UCLA in front, and then Mayfield scored and converted to win the game for the Sun Devils 27-25. It was turnabout is fair play for UCLA, who had beaten Arizona a week ago on the final play of the game.

“I am very proud of the guys,” said Lane. “We’ve been in UCLA’s shadow a bit and they might have more rugby IQ than us, but we won this on hard work.”

Mayfield was one of the stars, but Lane also pointed out how improved his team’s forward pack has been, rucking more cleanly now and providing good first-phase ball.

Next up for ASU is Utah, which saw ten different players score tries as they beat Arizona 68-13. Danny Christensen was on-target with his kicking, converting nine of ten tries, and Spencer Vickery was a huge force up front for the Utes.

This result sets up a Utah v Arizona clash in two weeks in Salt Lake City for second place in the conference. Both teams have Oregon State on their schedule, too, but are favored against the Beavers.

And we’re talking about second place, because first place has been wrapped up. Cal beat Oregon State 105-5 Saturday to finish conference play 5-0.

Cal ran out some younger players in the varsity game.

"It was an exciting opportunity for me," said flyhalf Matthew Coyle, who who scored 21 points with a try and eight conversions. "We played some good rugby for the most part."

"We got out there and did our job," added sophomore hooker Wade Ogburn. "As a team we ran our systems pretty well, stuck to the plan and performed."

Karl Thornton, Drew Gaffney, John Spradling, and Michael Goodwin all scored two tries for the Bears.

Cal finishes conference play 5-0 with 481 points scored and 39 points allowed. UCLA also finishes their conference season with a 2-3 record.
