Cal Poly defeated Trinity Western 44-36 in the first game of the Spartans' trip to Southern California.

For Trinity Western this was another good test and they will play UCSC in a couple of days. For Cal Poly, this was another improved performance.

Head Coach Chris O'Brien said his team has been working on its defensive structure, and that is beginning to show.

Southern Virginia took on Queens University Charlotte in a D1A-NCR crossover. This was a chance for Queens to run out what could be their starting XV for the fall of 2026 in some testing 15s games. The Royals will also play St. Thomas and Ohio State.

The game was also a key follow-up for SVU, who will also play Mount St. Mary's and James Madison before switching to 7s for the rest of the spring.

The Knights struck first, setting the tone early with a powerful run from Saveaalii Fitisemanu, who broke through multiple defenders to score. Kahanu Koi added the conversion to give Southern Virginia a 7–0 lead.

Queens responded with a strong counter down the left side off a kick to score in the corner. They added to that after taking the lineout on a penalty. SVU were penalized in the maul, and when Queens tried to go quickly the non-retreating Knights players made the tackle.

Penalty try and a yellow card, making it 12-7 Queens. Not long after, the Queens forwards powered through to make it 17-7.

Southern Virginia got a try in just before halftime, working a short lineout play that saw the forwards work the ball back-and-forth in the tramlines. Villiami Esikia powered through to score.

Queens opened the scoring in the second half with another good run through traffic. SVU hung in there after coming close to scoring and coming away with nothing. Kahanu Koi set them up with some good running and finally Fitisemanu capped off a determined drive led by Memmott and Pone Aisea to score his second try of the match. Saki Tikotani converted nicely to make it 22-19, Queens hanging on.

As the clock ticked away, Queens worked a nice move to score. SVU answered with one more try, but the Royals iced it with a penalty late to win 32-26. This was a solid showing from both teams, and a good step forward, despite the loss, for Southern Virginia in their journey back to prominence.
