Olympus, Capital Battle it Out
Olympus, Capital Battle it Out
Olympus HS from Utah faced Capital HS of Idaho Tuesday evening in a game that is part of an Olympus Pacific Northwest tour, and this game was a tight one.
Capital used an impressive pick-and-jam attack to dominate possession time and take a three-try lead late in the second half. But some mistakes by Capital and snappy play from Olympus pulled the Utah team close, and the game ended with Olympus No.8 Tyler Ringwood scoring on an eight man pick from a scrum five meters out. The kick was good and that tied the game 38-38.
The game ended in a tie according to the game referee, but there’s some confusion on the score due partly to the assistant referees not being in sync in approving conversion kicks. So some reports have Olympus winning. Nevertheless, it was a close, and exciting game.
“This was a tough opponent and the type of opponent we haven’t seen,” said Olympus Head Coac Blake Burdette. “They ran a really good pick-and-jam offense and we had to be patient, defending for 20 phases at a time. It was tough.”
Scrumhalf Alma Schoenfeld scored three tries for Olympus, while Quinn Meier led the way on offense.
Capital did superbly to be in this game after a long trip to Northern California, where they beat a Jesuit XV (not their 1st team), and Bishop O’Dowd, and followed that up with a win against Bingham in eastern Idaho.
Head Coach Matt Jacobsen said both teams were prevented from playing their best due to a stiff wing, but in the end he was proud go his players.
“We dominated possession and we put in a good performance,” said Jacobsen. “We just let the lead slip away.”
Flyhalf Colbin Larson scored two tries for Capital and was solid in various aspects of play, while Dillon Mishler led the forward effort.
